Compliance Training: What is the OHSA?

Select the link or button to view

This is a small sample of a rebuild of Ontario's Health and Safety at work Occupational Health and Safety Training course.

Tools: Articulate Storyline, Canva, Mic Monster

Time in Development: 5 hours for this sample.

My Role: Development, Graphic Design, Editor, Instructional Designer

Client: Open World Learning.

Challenges: Reimagining a previously very text-heavy section of the eLearning in a more interactive and engaging interface. Since this is compliance training, I needed to ensure that learners read through each section prior before being able to continue.

Solutions: The Next button is disabled until learners have gone through each item on the check box list.

Results: As desired, this section is much less text-heavy and more engaging. Learners have to check each box before continuing to the next section.

Below is the original eLearning.
Note how text-heavy these blocks are. For many learners, large blocks of text are inaccessible.
The new format- including wider kerning and spacing, lower contrast (but still meeting WCAG guidelines), and checkbox format to break up text is much easier to look at, read, and comprehend.

This simulation walks learners through how to change the background color of an image using Canva so that it matches branding guidelines. After walking learners through, they are able to try it on their own, with optional hints.

Tools: Articulate Storyline, Canva

Time in Development: 1.5 days

My Role: Development, Instructional Designer, scripting

Client: This is for a fictional client- the intended learner is a new designer who is training to work in the field. The learners are familiar with design terms, and need to brush up on a commonly used skill.

Challenges: As a learner, I've often wondered why software sims don't include optional audio hints that are meant to scaffold learners from the Tutorial to being able to perform tasks independently during Try Mode. During development, I found out the extra layering and conditional triggering involved in adding audio hints was a bit more work than I had expected, but the result is worth it!

Solutions: Learners are properly scaffolded from the tutorial to independent learning through the use of optional audio hints.

Results: This is an engaging software simulation, bookended with characters that provide instruction and acknowledge completion.

Customer Service Branching Scenario

This small branching scenario covers a common problem faced by appointment-based businesses: how to handle missed appointments.

Tools: Articulate Storyline, Canva

Time in Development: 1 day

My Role: Development, Instructional Designer, scripting

Client: This is for a fictional client- the learner is a new receptionist at an acupuncture clinic who is new to customer service.

Challenges: I wanted to demonstrate to new receptionists why the business has policies in place for missed appointments.

Solutions: The story follows through and if the incorrect choice is made with the customer, the business has to close.

Results: This is a quick and memorable customer service training that demonstrates the importance of customer service when enforcing business policies.

Developed in Articulate Rise, this course aims to reduce time tracking variation and unnecessary communication about taking time off among remote employees. It teaches new employees how to use Harvest, Justworks, and Slack.

Tools: Articulate Rise, Articulate Storyline, Vyond, Canva, Ableton Live, Power Point

Time in Development: 51 hours

My Role: Instructional Designer, Scripts, Storyboard, Graphic Design, Development, Narration, Audio editor, Analysis, Interview SME

Client: This was done for a software development company that wishes to remain anonymous. All identifying information has been removed, and the company is referred to as Neptune Unlimited in this course.

Challenges: The company experiences wide variation in time tracking among remote employees. Many developers are coming from a freelance background, which leads to a different time tracking style. The company is also experiencing unnecessary communication about time off.

Solutions: This teaches employees how to use Harvest, and addresses the differences in billing time as a freelance developer and as an employee working for an agency. After taking this course, employees will be able to differentiate between time-off situations that need to be discussed with the team and those that do not. Employees will learn how to request time off in the Justworks system without needing to ask HR for help.

Results: The intended outcome of this 20 minute course is that newly onboarded employees will feel comfortable billing their time as employees for an agency using Harvest. HR will have fewer requests for PTO and FMLA since employees will be able to submit those requests on their own using Justworks. Slack channels will be used during business hours and only when an employee needs to take more than half a day off, as per company policy.

Vyond video: Freelance Worker Mindset vs. Agency Employee Mindset

Many developers come to Neptune Unlimited from a freelance background. This video explains that developers working for Neptune Unlimited should track and bill their hours with a different mindset than they may have when billing for freelance work.

Tools: Vyond, Abelton Live

Time in Development: 1 day

My Role: Instructional Designer, SME interviewer, narrator, audio editor, video developer

Client: This was done for a software development company that wishes to remain anonymous. All identifying information has been removed, and the company is referred to as Neptune Unlimited in this course.

Challenges: The company experiences wide variation in time tracking among remote employees. One reason for the variation is that many developers are entering the agency from a freelance background. This video sets new employees' minds at ease and encourages them to bill research hours to the project they are working on.

Solutions: Learners will understand that by billing their research hours to a project, they are helping the agency to provide more accurate estimates to future customers.

Results: The intended outcome of this interaction is that employees at Neptune Unlimited will feel comfortable billing research hours to whichever project they are working on.

This client-facing sales tool was designed to educate clients as to which product would best fit their needs, and ultimately to save the business owner time.

Tools: Articulate Storyline, Canva

Time in Development: 8 hours

My Role: Development, Graphic Design, Interview Business Owner

Client: Chelsey Ashford Photography. It's not every day that an instructional designer gets to work with the owner of a photography business. I designed and developed this interactive sales tool to save this business owner valuable time and increase sales of more expensive session types. Clients were confused about which type of photoshoot they should book, and often booked the cheaper session, hoping for the more expensive product. This tool leaves no room for guesswork. Future plans include sending the results of the interaction along with the client's name to her in an email using a JavaScript trigger.

Challenges: Working out sending the information to her using a JavaScript trigger will be a fun challenge.

Solutions: Assigned a numeric variable to each response, housed the results in a hidden results slide, then branched the user to the appropriate product depending on the result. Results are weighted toward the more expensive products.

Results: The client loves this tool and we will work on developing a few more, then putting them on her website for clients to use. This will save her time, increase customer satisfaction, lead to repeat customers (which will reduce advertising costs) and increase profits.

Developed in Articulate Storyline, this is gamified interaction guides users to selecting a houseplant according to their preferences.

Tools: Articulate Storyline, Canva, Adobe Express, Albleton Live

Time in Development: 2 days

My Role: Instructional Designer, Graphic Design, eLearning Developer, Composer, Performer, Recording Engineer

Client: N/A. This was built as a prototype. Similar interactions could be developed to help accountholders select an ideal account or to assist appointment setters in selecting the best practitioner that would meet a clients needs, and more.

Challenges: Having music play continuously throughout all slides was accomplished by using  a Javascript trigger, web object, and variable. The player is modified to allow the user to stop music at any time.

Solutions: This solution works, but I will continue to research how to enable a music on/off trigger within the player that automatically starts when the user loads the interaction.

Results: The outcome of this interaction is that learners are able to identify plants that would thrive given their watering style, lighting in the home, and some personal preferences. Users are also able to learn more about how to care for the plants they select. If users select plants that thrive and meet their preferences, they will be likely to purchase more plants in the future.

Developed in Articulate Storyline, this interaction will be placed at the end of the first module of the Rise course, How to Track Your Time. Content is structured into two slides: the first gives the learner information, and the second is a knowledge check.

Tools: Articulate Storyline, Canva

Time in Development: 4 hours

My Role: Instructional Designer, Graphic Design, eLearning Developer

Client: This was done for a software development company that wishes to remain anonymous. All identifying information has been removed, and the company is referred to as Neptune Unlimited in this course.

Challenges: The company experiences wide variation in time tracking among remote employees. Development challenges: giving the user immediate feedback while displaying only one card at a time. I created a conditional state for the cards so that if placed incorrectly, a new card featuring a hint would be displayed for one attempt.

Solutions: This interaction helps employees to bill their time correctly to a project or to office time. Learners will also be able to identify activities that are not billable.

Results: The intended outcome of this interaction is that employees at Neptune Unlimited will feel comfortable assigning a wider variety of tasks to 'Project Time' rather than 'Office Time' which will in the long term make the company more profitable.
